Brian Reiter 2009  The Comets entered the playoffs as the seven seed, and defeated the Phillies in the elimination round before falling to the Yankees 2-1. The year was marked by a number of close losses and missing personnel.Comets MVP - Spencer Graves (1B) & Jimmy Donofrio (C/OF) Comets Rookie of the Year - Jimmy Donofrio (C/OF) Comets Sportsman of the Year - Rafi Cave (OF) & Jared Shelly (OF) Wins - 9 * Losses - 14 New Additions Buddy Bonetti Gavin White 2008 The Comets competed but fell short in a number of games during the second year of the Gionta era. During the playoffs, the team rallied from 7 runs down in the bottom of the 7th, but couldn't complete the comeback losing 7-6 to the Mustangs. Comets MVP - Jeremy Honaker (SS) Comets Rookie of the Year - Andrew Marcus (3B) Comets Sportsman of the Year - Rafi Cave (OF) Wins - 7 * Losses - 17 New Additions Andrew Marcus Phil Motley Jared Shelly 2007The Comets took the field in 2007 ready to vie for the league crown and restored some franchise pride with a measured improvement over the past three seasons. The Comets played games at Deptford High School, La Salle University, Richie Ashburn Field, and Erny Field and took part in an exciting league exhibition against the Russian National Baseball team. The 2007 team vied for first place in the GPMABL Franklin Division until a late-seas slide brough them back to the middle ofthe pack. The Comets advanced in the GPMABL playoffs with a big comeback victory before being eliminated in the quarter-final round. 2006 The Comets took the field in 2006 looking to rebound from a disappointing year. With new talent anchoring the squad, the Comets played games at Deptford High School, Camden Catholic High School, Cardinal O'Hara High School, Liberty Bell Field, and Kerr Field. The 2006 campaign had its ups and downs, and in the end, the Comets were their own worst enemies, squandering gutsy pitching efforts with fielding woes. The Comets advanced to the finals of the GPMABL Playoff Elimination Round, before losing in the Elimination Round finals. The franchise recorded both its 150th win and 100th loss during the 2006 season. Comets MVP - James Freeman Comets Rookie of the Year - James Freeman Comets Sportsman of the Year - Matt Gionta Wins - 8 * Losses - 13 New Additions James Freeman Matt Gionta 2005 The Comets endured another disappointing year on the field in 2005 and wasted too many solid efforts from key contributors. The Comets played their games at Deptford High School, Camden Catholic High School, and Cardinal O'Hara High School. With new manager Joe Collins at the helm, the Comets just couldn't get everything to work at once and the season ended with the Comets on the losing end of a great 1-0 elimination-round game. Comets MVP - Paul McInnis Comets Rookie of the Year - Paul McInnis Comets Sportsman of the Year - Brett Mandel Wins - 6 * Losses - 17 2004 The Comets took the field in 2004 as defending GPMABL League Champions and played games at Deptford High School, Neumann High School, Girard College, and Richie Ashburn Field. The 2004 campaign was a forgettable one as not much went right for the defending champs all year. The Comets endured their worst season in a decade and finished last in the regular-season standings. The playoffs did not help save any face as the Comets were defeated in the GPMABL elimination round. Comets MVP - Billy Aichroth Comets Rookie of the Year - Rory Miller Comets Sportsman of the Year - Tommy Jackson Wins - 6 * Losses - 13 2003 - GPMABL CHAMPIONS The Comets took to the field in 2003 ready to challenge again for the league crown. The Comets played their games at Deptford High School, Delaware Valley Community College, Girard College, Neumann High School, and Richie Ashburn Field. With new manager Anthony Bologna at the helm, the Comets won 11 games to secure the second seed for the playoffs. After advancing to the finals in businesslike fashion, the Comets took the 2003 GPMABL crown with a thrilling victory in a single-game, winner-take-all Championship. Comets MVP - Joe Collins Comets Rookie of the Year - Rafi Cave Comets Sportsman of the Year - Gregg Jewett Wins - 11 * Losses - 8 New Addition Rafi Cave 2002 The Comets took the field in 2002 as defending GPMABL League Champions and played games at Deptford High School, Delaware Valley Community College, Girard College, and Richie Ashburn Field. But injuries, off-years, and bad luck added up to a down year for the Comets. After enduring their first losing season in eight years, the Comets advanced to the league semi-finals before being swept out of the playoffs by the eventual league champions. After the season, Comets manager Mike Plank fell on his own sword and went into exile, leaving the team to face the future alone. Comets MVP - Dwight Steward Comets Rookie of the Year - Jimmy Jackson Comets Sportsman of the Year - Mike Plank Wins - 7 * Losses - 12 2001 - GPMABL CHAMPIONS  The Comets took to the field in 2001 in a new league ready to play ball -- without the problems associated with previous leagues - in the newly formed Greater Philadelphia Men's Adult Baseball League. The Comets played their games at Deptford High School, Delaware Valley Community College, and Richie Ashburn Field. The Comets took the inaugural Greater Philadelphia Men's Adult Baseball League Pennant, clinching with two games to play in the season. In the GPMABL Championship Series, the Comets fell behind after losing game one, but came back in dramatic fashion to win games two and three to take the inaugural GPMABL Championship crown. Comets MVP - Fran Ciociola Comets Rookie of the Year - Andy Batavick Comets Sportsman of the Year - Joe Collins Wins - 13 * Losses - 6 2000  Rechristened and playing in the Delaware County Men's Adult Baseball League, the Philadelphia Comets entered the 2000 ready to vie for a championship. Playing home games at Chichester High School in Delaware County, and Richie Ashburn Field in FDR Park, the Comets finished second in the DCMABL American Division. Facing playoff elimination, the Comets fought back before losing the American Division semi finals two games to one. Comets MVP - Joe Collins Comets Rookie of the Year - E.J. Brady Comets Sportsman of the Year - Fran Ciociola Wins - 13 * Losses - 6 1999 - DIVISION CHAMPS  The last Black Sox team of the 1900s played home games at Temple University's Erny Field and took the field during the playoffs at Richie Ashburn Field in FDR Park. A fun weekend at the MABL Mid-Summer Classic on Long Island highlighted a successful season. The Sox won the DVMABL North Division Pennant for a third straight year earning a team-record 18 victories. After grinding through two rounds of playoffs, the Sox lost the GPMABL Championship three games to none. Black Sox MVP - Greg Reilley Black Sox Rookie of the Year - Antonio Aspite Black Sox Sportsman of the Year - Hector Santiago Wins - 18 * Losses - 8 1998 - DIVISION CHAMPS  With zealous player recruitment and talent development, the Black Sox put together an excellent team for the 1998 campaign. Playing home games at Northeast High School in Northeast Philadelphia, the Sox won the DVMABL North Division Pennant for a second straight year. After winning the North Division semi-finals, the Black Sox won a thrilling, three-game series to clinch the Division Championship. The Sox won game one in the finals, before losing the DVMABL League Championship Series three games to one. Black Sox MVP - Tommy Jackson Black Sox Rookie of the Year - Dennis Geiger Black Sox Sportsman of the Year - Greg Reilley Wins - 13 * Losses - 8 1997 - DIVISION CHAMPS As a legitimate league powerhouse, the Black Sox fought their way to a Pennant, winning their division. Playing home games at a variety of fields including 7th and Packer in South Philadelphia, the Sox entered the playoffs as a serious favorite to contend for the league Championship. Unfortunately for the Sox, an upset in the first round of the playoffs sent them home for an early off-season. Wins - 16 * Losses - 8 1996 Upgrading talent in key positions, the Black Sox emerged as a team to beat during the 1996 season. Playing home games at a variety of fields including La Salle University, the Sox entered the playoffs for their second straight year. After winning the League Semi-Finals, the Sox lost a disappointing Championship series three games to one. Wins - 15 * Losses - 4 New Addition Brett Mandel 1995 With the addition of talented players, the Black Sox surged into respectability. Playing home games at Deptford High School in Depford, NJ, the Sox turned from pretender to contender and qualified for the playoffs. The Sox lost in the League Semi-Finals to the eventual League Champions to end their first winning season. Wins - 13 * Losses - 8 |
