UPCOMING SCHEDULE COMETS OUTLAST REDS, 20-17 In one of the highest scoring games in GPMABL history, the Philadelphia Comets outlasted the Bucks County Reds 20-17 on July 13. Both teams capitlized on poor defensive play, with each team scoring in six of the seven innings. Phil Motely earned his third victory of the year, while Tommy Jackson and DeWitt Brown threw the final three innings to clinch the victory.Offensively, the Comets were paced by Spencer Graves, who had a pair of doubles and single in a 3-for-4 day. Graves also knocked in 2 runs and scored 3. Tommy Jackson, Andrew Marcus and Scott Colmyer also added multi-hit games, and Jeremy Honaker and Matt Gionta each scored 3 runs. Next up for the Comets are the Protective Video Mustangs at Pietropola Memorial Field in Clifton Heights. COMETS TAKE TWO OUT OF THREE FROM COLT .45s The Comets started the day off right, with Tommy Jackson stealing home in the sixth inning of a suspended game to beat the Colt .45s 4-3. The game, which started on May 18, completed a split of the first meeting between the two clubs. MOTLEY'S CREW: COMETS SPLIT WITH ROCKS 2-4, 4-2 BLUE ROCKS SWEEP COMETS, 9-2/12-1 The Blue Rocks handed the Comets a pair of losses on Sunday, 9-2 in Game 1 and 12-1 in Game 2. The Comets offensive struggled and the defense was unable to keep the Rocks off the bases for much of the afternoon. BROWN'S BLAST LIFTS COMETS OVER A'S DeWitt Brown's deep sacrifice fly to left field scored Scott Colmyer, as the Comets took game 2 from the A's 5-4 in eight innings on Sunday. The Comets (2-9) trailing 4-3 and down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, rallied to tie the game and then win it in extra innings. Brett Leibhart threw 3.2 innings of scoreless ball to pick up the win. The Comets and the Colt .45s played 5.2 innings into Game 2 on Sunday, only to have the 3-3 tie suspended by rain. Efforts are being made to make the game up before the two teams meet on June 29. Phil Motley was in the midst of another strong outing when the game was halted, holding one of the GPMABL’s best teams to 3 runs in 5 innings (1 ER). Motley was also at the plate when the game was stopped, with runners on first and third and two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Game 1 proved to be more of the same for the hard luck Comets, as they dropped their fifth one-run game of the season, 4-3. Starter Dana Erb yielded just 1 earned run in the complete game loss. Leading for the entire game, the Colt .45s added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 4-2. Comets shortstop Jeremy Honaker closed the gap with his first home run of the year, a majestic solo shot to make it 4-3. The Comets were unable to pull any closer as veteran Colt .45s starter Ian Downes completed the win for the visitors. |
